Published September 09, 2013
An 8-year-old girl who reportedly died after suffering internal injuries on the first night of her arranged marriage has sparked an outcry in Yemen, with activists calling for the groom's arrest.
Kuwait newspaper Al Watan, citing Yemeni media reports, reported that the girl died in the northwestern city of Hardh. She is believed to have suffered a tear to her genitals on her wedding night, after marrying to a man more than five times her age.
Activists in Yemen called the man a “beastly groom,” calling for police to arrest him and the girl’s family for making her go through the ordeal, according to GulfNews.com.
The man was not identified in media reports.

Iranian virgin prisoners raped before execution
Tuesday, July 21, 2009 The Jerusalem Post
An anonymous paramilitary Basiji militia has just exposed the rape ritual of virgin female prisoners on the eve of their executions. These rapes are ordered and condoned by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei's regime in Iran.
According to Islamic law, if a woman dies a virgin she is considered a martyr and guaranteed a place in heaven. To avoid this undesirable scenario, the virgin prisoner is raped to ensure she goes to hell. Rape is the final human contact for many female prisoners.
He said he had been a highly regarded member of the force, and had so "impressed my superiors" that, at 18, "I was given the 'honor' to temporarily marry young girls before they were sentenced to death."
In the Islamic Republic it is illegal to execute a young woman, regardless of her crime, if she is a virgin, he explained. Therefore a "wedding" ceremony is conducted the night before the execution: The young girl is forced to have sexual intercourse with a prison guard - essentially raped by her "husband."
"I regret that, even though the marriages were legal," he said. Why the regret, if the marriages were "legal?" "Because," he went on, "I could tell that the girls were more afraid of their 'wedding' night than of the execution that awaited them in the morning. And they would always fight back, so we would have to put sleeping pills in their food. By morning the girls would have an empty expression; it seemed like they were ready or wanted to die.
"I remember hearing them cry and scream after [the rape] was over," he said. "I will never forget how this one girl clawed at her own face and neck with her finger nails afterwards. She had deep scratches all over her."
As for why the prison guards 'marry' these women; rape outside of marriage is a crime in Iran, but no such crime exists in marriage. The guards marry to preserve their 'purity' and avoid the same destination to hell. The marriage is conducted as a legitimate and official contract which includes, among other things, an estimated dowry. To add salt to the wound, the dowry is then paid to the family of the victim. It becomes the equivalent of an official notification that she was executed.
[There is no mention of why they are executing young girls in the first place]

Two Middle Eastern mothers are sitting in the cafe chatting over a pint of goat's milk.
The older of the moms pulls out her bag and starts flipping through pictures and reminiscing.
"This is my oldest son, Mohamed. He would be 24 now."
The other mom replies, "I remember him as a baby."
"He's a martyr now", says the older mom.
"Oh, so sad, my dear", says the other mom.
Mom flips to another picture. "And this is my second son, Kali He would be 21 now."
"Oh, I remember him, too. He had such curly hair when he was born."
Mom sighs, "He's a martyr, too."
"Oh gracious me" says the second mother.
"And this is my third son. My beautiful Ahmed. He would be 18 now", Mom whispers.
"Yes", says her friend enthusiastically, "I remember when he started school."
"He's a martyr also", Mom says, with tears in her eyes.
After a pause and a deep sigh, the second Muslim mother looks wistfully at the photos and says:
"They blow up so fast, don't they?"
